Joe Maye of The Voice Season 10. (NBC Photo)His audition: Joe Maye, 24, of Baltimore, Md., auditioned with “I Put a Spell on You.” He opened the song a cappella, earning a chair turn from Christina Aguilera. Blake Shelton turned late in the performance. To seal the deal and make sure Joe landed on her team, Christina strolled to the stage and performed a duet of the song with the young man.

His background: Joe is another of the returning auditioners who failed to turn a chair in Season 9. The first time around, he says he felt confident when he took the stage to perform Cameo’s “Word Up.” But because he was moving so much during the performance, the coaches questioned the song choice and dancing’s effect on his vocals. He returned to his bartending job. But for Season 10, he returned with two Voice friends — Season 9 standouts Mark Hood and Ellie Lawrence. “I’m not dancing this time. I’m standing in place and I’m just going to sing.” The new strategy worked.

What the show didn’t show:

  • He got his first singing experience when he joined choir in middle school.
  • He spent most of high school performing in musicals, according to his bio on The Voice website.
  • After graduating, he got a job singing on an entertainment cruise boat that provided trips along Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. “It was really corny,” he told The Voice in last year’s pre-audition interview. “But it got me comfortable with singing.”
  • He’s also dabbled in commercial modeling and photography, according to his Facebook bio.
  • He released his first EP, “Set Free,” in October 2012. The seven tracks are available through Bandcamp.
  • He followed that up with a four-song EP called “Her Song” in August of 2014. The title track and “Danger” are the highlights.
  • Joe classifies his music as combining elements of rock, pop, R&B, alternative, and soul.
  • As for that duet with Christina — “A lot of people were asking me about it and it’s like I literally like, I got so lost in the moment I felt like I blacked out,” Joe said in a conference call with the media. “Like when I was watching it myself on TV, it almost felt like I didn’t know who that was, like I was watching somebody else. Like it was like a complete out-of-body experience. Something just took over and I just got lost in the moment with her. And it was everything. It was life-changing. So, I’m just so grateful that she shared that moment and made me a part of that with her.”
  • On iTunes: His 2014 EP and his performance from The Voice.
