John Gilman of the Voice Season 10. (NBC Photo)His audition: John Gilman, 23, Bayville, N.J., auditioned with Elvis Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel.” His unique performance enticed a chair turns from Adam Levine, but no one else, meaning John became a member of Team Adam. The Maroon 5 frontman praised John’s precision and the courage he showed in deciding to cover an Elvis song.

His background: John lives in a log cabin with his two brothers. “There’s no wifi. There’s no cable TV,” he says. “But it’s nice because it gives us a lot of quality time to sit around and jam. It definitely allows me to be creative.” When John was young, he says his mom signed him up for a group called The Time Cruisers, a 1950s doo-wop cover group. To this day, John says the music he plays “has that older vibe to it” from the 1950s and ’60s, rockabilly and Delta blues. John says he’s worked a wide variety of jobs — including construction and work on a blimp — “but it got to the point where I knew I had to start doing my music again.”

What the show didn’t show:

  • He previously performed with a band called Bird Bath that also included his brother Josh Gilman, Ryan Gerber and Justin Meelheim.
  • John describes Bird Bath as “a garage rock band influenced by early rock and roll stuff.”
  • In 2012, Bird Bath released an impressive 10-track album called “Line & Hook.” Standout tracks include “Cold Water,” “Man of the Sea” and “Diamond Ring.”
  • According to his Voice bio, John’s family hit hard times in 2012 when his mother was struck by a drunk driver. One of her knees and both of her ankles were shattered and she also suffered a broken arm. She’s since recovered, allowing John to move forward with his music career.
  • Bird Bath played a number of shows to help John’s mother cover medical expenses following that accident, according to a web story you can read here about her path to recovery.
  • During a conference call with the media, John called singing an Elvis song on national TV an “incredible” experience, adding “I’m obviously super inspired by Elvis. He’s one of my heroes.”
  • During the same interview, he said: “My goal is always to inspire people and remind that anyone can do anything they set their mind to.” He’s thankful that his audition helped deliver that message.
  • John has spent a lot of time performing in the Asbury Park area, both with his former band and as a solo artist. “There’s a great music scene in Asbury and there’s a lot of really talented musicians and very supportive people that are always kind of there to lend a hand and help you kind of get on your way,” he said.
  • On iTunes: His Voice performance and the 2012 album by Bird Bath.
