Christina Aguilera turned her chair early in the performance. At the last second, Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton turned as well. Nick joined Team Pharrell, calling his coach “the Quincy Jones of our generation.”

His background: Both of his parents were performing artists, and Nick says he was encouraged to try ballet growing up. At 18, he got a contract with Carolina Ballet and became a professional dancer. But he says he always loved music and would perform whenever he got the chance. He says it was his wife, Christina, who encouraged him “to hang up the tights and pursue music full time.” He said his career was looking up when his son was born and diagnosed with arthrogryposis, prompting some doctors to say he’d never walk or feed himself. “My new primary focus in life became his recovery,” Nick says. His son, Bash, now walks on his own and adorably strolled onto The Voice stage after Nick’s audition. Nick also had a record contract at one time, but parted ways with the label over artistic differences.

What the show didn’t show:

  • Record contract or not, he’s already released lots of music, including a single called “One” and a self-titled seven-track EP last year.
  • Standout tracks from the EP include “Monday Morning” (which I featured here), “Eternity” and “Lucky Ones” (listen to those below).
  • Nick was signed to Interscope Records and began working on an EP with the label, but never finished it, according to this profile story.
  • On the show, Nick said his former record label didn’t like the image of a married male pop star with a young son. During a conference call with the media, Nick said that’s one reason he’s so happy to have the opportunity The Voice presents.
  • He explained it this way: “This is going to give me the opportunity to be my authentic self, which is something that I didn’t think I could be in this industry and really embrace myself for who I am and the lifestyle I live and have it aligned with my music career.”
  • In an interview with Teen Diaries, Nick says he was born in New York City and grew up in New Jersey. He says his hobbies include freestyle rapping and he lists Sting’s “La Belle Dame Sans Regrets” as his favorite song.
  • According to his bio on The Voice website, Nick recently completely a 30-stop college tour.
  • On iTunes: His Voice performance, the aforementioned EP and single, plus: a nine-track “City Lights” album in 2014, a six-track “Take Off” EP released in 2011, and an 11-track “Nice to Be Here” album from 2009.
