Christina Aguilera turned around in a heartbeat. She wound up being the only coach to do so, meaning Shalyah joined Team Christina.

Her background: Shalyah says it’s a lot of fun in her household because her family is so big; she has three sisters and four brothers. In the past year, her mother lost her job, forcing the large family to move into a smaller house. “My parents just made it work,” Shalyah says. As for the fun, there’s the family band — Fearing Star. Shalyah plays keyboards and is the lead singer. Her mom manages the group, which performs at local coffee shops and events. But Shalyah dreams of being a solo artist.

What the show didn’t show:

  • According to her bio on The Voice website, Shalyah has been singing since she was 5.
  • That family band — FearingStar — also features Yashiya on guitar, Chaamalah on bass and Chaasad on horns and vocals, according to the group’s Facebook page.
  • Fearing Star’s music ranges from R&B to reggae to soft rock and some pop tossed in for good measure.
  • Shalyah is the second oldest of the eight siblings and says the band got its start one day when her brother started playing a song on clarinet. She joined in on piano. One of her sisters started singing. ” We thought, ‘We’re really pretty good.’”
  • Shalyah has attended the rock school at the Patel Conservatory and Straz Center in Tampa, Fla.
  • Through that school, she met a member of a band called the Muddy Apes and got a chance to sing backup on an album they were recording, which marked her first studio experience.
  • She also played the role of Ursula in the conservatory’s performance of “The Little Mermaid, Jr.”
  • On iTunes: Just her performance from The Voice.
