Meet Barry Black of Team Adam on The Voice

His audition: Barry Black, 27, of Las Vegas, opened by making flugelhorn type noises with his mouth, then launched into a rendition of Bobby Calwell’s “What You Won’t Do for Love.” The performance prompted chair turns from Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Adam called Barry “weird and wonderful.” Barry chose Team Adam.

Background: A native of American Samoa, Barry told The Voice his family moved to the U.S. when he was 5 so his dad could pursue a career in hotel management. He wound up running two hotels in Washington State, and Barry worked for him. But he didn’t exactly love his job, so he decided to pursue music instead, teaching himself guitar. He eventually moved to Las Vegas where his band was performing five nights a week pre-Voice.

On picking Adam: “It was Adam from the beginning. He’s a creative guy, and so am I.”

What the show didn’t show: On his website, Barry describes himself as “an acoustic singer/songwriter highly influenced by the sounds of pure soul and rhythm” who strives to “remind people of what music used to be.” That bio also talks about a performance in which he opened for John Legend on New Year’s Eve 2011 and about an upcoming album. Barry released a single called “Fever” in June. Listen to it and another original below. On Facebook, he lists his genre as “feel great.” And that Las Vegas band is Barry Black and the Senzuals.

Quote: “I think if my parents see me on The Voice, they’ll realize this isn’t a joke for me. This is something I’ve worked so hard to be.”

On iTunes: His Voice performance and the aforementioned single.
