Meet Fernanda Bosch of Team Blake on The Voice

Fernanda Bosch Her audition: Fernanda Bosch, 17, of Miami, Fla., auditioned with Macy Gray’s “I Try,” an it was immediately apparent she has an interesting voice. Still, she’s well into performance before Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton turn their chairs almost simultaneously. Blake liked her “natural sandpaper, gravel rasp,” called it “bad-ass” and “so Team Blake.” And so Fernanda opted to join Team Blake.

Her background: In her pre-audition interview, we learned that Fernanda is from a Venezuelan family and that they get together and sing and dance. “It’s something that keeps our culture alive and it was a big influence on me,” Fernanda says. She also helps her mom, a former Olympic qualifier, with swim lessons. For the last four years, Fernanda has been working with kids involved in the Special Olympics. But she says music is her true passion. She formed a group caled Music Lab with other teen musicians, but says the biggest crowd she has ever performed for is about 200 people. She’s looking to branch out musically.

What the show didn’t show: Fernanda’s website bio indicates she was born in Canada. Now that she’s living in Florida, her other interests include beach volleyball, surfing and long skateboarding. She also makes bracelets and the music program she helps her mother with is called Special Love. “It’s really cool to incorporate my music into that,” the high school senior says in her Voice video interview. The impact on the children in the program “made me realize how powerful music is.” She classifies her music as pop-surf, R&B and soul on Facebook, but admits she’s really still searching for a musical identity and is hoping Blake can help her with that. “I’m not really that defined in my artistry,” she says. “I listen to a wide variety of music and I enjoy singing a wide variety of music. I really hope Blake can help me find my sound.” Among her music influences, she mentions Lauren Hill, Stevie Wonder and Sara Bareilles, which would seem to make Gwen a more logical choice as coach. But Fernanda says she’s been impressed with how Blake has worked with past contestants on the show.

Update: She was eliminated from the show when she lost a battle round match against Allison Bray. They sang Taylor Swift’s “Sparks Fly.”

On iTunes: Just her audition song.
