His audition: Josh Murley of Kerryville, Texas, sang “The Freshmen” for his blind audition on The Voice. He said a case of nerves hit him when he walked on stage. “I had to close my eyes for the beginning, for the first three notes. (Adam) turned within 8 seconds. After that it felt fine, great.” Josh confesses that he doesn’t recall a whole lot of what was said, except that Adam complimented his tone and said he was thankful no other coach turned around.

His background: The Voice aired just a snippet of Josh’s audition, but the show’s website says he grew up singing choir in high school and is now a father and full-time musician hoping to provide a better future for his family.

What the show didn’t show: Josh has been performing with a band called “Someone Like You” that he formed with drummer Patrick McCorkindale back in 2004. On Facebook, they described themselves as “a roving band of badass laser guided funk bots” who perform everything from alternative rock to reggae to hip-hop music. They earned honors as best new band and best male vocalists in the area in 2004 and as best alternative band in 2007. Judging from the wide-ranging set list on Facebook, singing a wide variety of covers on The Voice wouldn’t pose a problem for Josh.”Honestly, I’ve gone kind of every direction (musically),” Josh said in a conference call with the media. “Everything except country and tejano and polkas I’ve kind of done. I’ve played together with a band in my hometown throughout Texas for the last 10 years, just gigging as much as possible and upward of like 300 days a year. That’s it. I just played music for the last decade.”

On having Adam as a coach: “To be on Team Adam is exactly what I wanted. From the first album to now, I’ve always loved him. And since he’s been on the show, I like the way he interacted with contestants. I’m hoping he’ll teach me stuff I’ve never even known about my voice.”

On iTunes: His audition song plus two recently released singles, “Same Difference” and “Start a New Day.” You can hear full-length versions of several of Someone Like You’s originals by heading to their ReverbNation page.

Update: He lost to the duo of Dawn and Hawkes in the first battle round; they sang “Stuck in the Middle with You.” But Josh was stolen by Shakira. He was eliminated after a round two battle with Patrick Thompson. They sang “Run to You.”
