Meet Mia Pfirrman of Team Adam on The Voice

Mia Pfirrman Her audition: Mia Pfirrman, 19, of Temple City, Calif., auditioned with Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally.” She immediately displayed a big voice and lots of potential, but was well into her performance before Adam Levine and Blake Shelton started a wave of chair turns. Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams followed. Pharrell complimented her on the vocal risks she took. Adam said she delivered some spectacular moments, but that her vocal performance needed refinement. Mia decided to join Team Adam.

Her background: Mia’s parents were in a band together called September. “I would make fun of my mom because she had that big ’80s hair,” Mia confesses. They stopped performing to find more lucrative ways to support their family, Mia’s dad says. Mia attends community college and has a class called pop-rock. “My teacher books these gigs for us for the weekends and it’s such good experience,” she says. Mia admits she’s still trying to figure out who she is as an artist and hopes working with a Voice coach can help in that sense.

What the show didn’t show: Mia is the youngest member of a musical family; many of the videos you’ll find of her on YouTube also feature her sister Melanie. In her Voice video, Mia admits she’s still searching for a musical identity. “It’s taken a long time for me to find where I want to be and what kind of music I want to stick with. Sometimes, I battle with myself, wondering if I want to do pop, do I want to do rock, do I want to do R&B.” As evidence, her Soundcloud page includes a country song and a pop ballad. She’s hoping her stint on The Voice provides some direction. Mia says she battles stage fright, but felt strangely at home on The Voice stage. She says the blind audition song choice had something to do with that. You see, Mia also auditioned for Seasons 5 and 6, but failed to make it that far. “I was never really happy with the song choices given me each time,” she said. “This time around, it was just perfect. It was cool because I actually sing that song (“Unconditionally”) at a lot of my gigs.” Why Team Adam? “He acted as if it would mean a lot to him if I chose him. I really appreciated the fact that he had no problem telling me that he knew there were some things I needed to work on, but it was the fact that he wanted to work on them with me — that he wanted to be that person.”

On iTunes: Just her audition song.
