His audition: Patrick Thompson, 35, of Festus, Missouri, sang the Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See” for his audition on The Voice. He immediately displayed his gruff voice. Midway through the song, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine turned around in rapid succession. Adam called his performance “real grit.” And Patrick joined Team Adam.

His background: He says he first got into music because his mother was one of 10 children and her family had a band called “The Sounds of Peace.” It was a folk band, “almost like a campfire band,” Patrick says. His mom would take him and his brother to rehearsals, and Patrick decided he wanted to play guitar. Today, Patrick says he performs everything from the 1950s up and plays in a pair of bands. Over the years, Patrick says, he’s held lots of jobs, some of which were chosen because of how they would affect his schedule playing music. “You can take any material thing away from me,” he told The Voice, “but you can’t take music.”

On choosing Adam: “When you go out there, everybody thinks who they’re leaning toward. But when you’re out there, everything changes. You go with your gut. Adam really fought for me. He sold himself to me.”

What the show didn’t show: Those two bands are The Black Tie Affair and Tricky-N-M.E., and they play around the St. Louis area. Black Tie Affair is billed as “10 pounds of talent in a 5-pound” bag. Tricky N.M.E. is an acoustic duo. Patrick is lead vocalist for both. Still, he says in his Voice video “I’ve never had vocal lessons or anything like that, so I’m a blank canvas and (Adam’s) the artist. He can mold me into something so much better than what I am already.” At 35, he’s looking at The Voice as a possible break into the music business and an opportunity “that I’ve got to do something with. Music has been there for me my whole life. It’s never given up on me, and I’m not going to give up on it.”

On iTunes: Just his audition song.

Update: He lost to Kat Perkins in the first battle round; they sang “Whenever I Call You Friend. Patrick was then stolen by Shakira. In the second round of battles, he defeated Josh Murley. They sang “Run to You.”

September 6th 2014. Got to meet PATRICK THOMSON FROM THE VOICE. INCREDIBLE SINGER AND PERSON. IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO HEAR HIS BAND – THE BLACK TIE AFFAIR PLEASE GO. He is from Festus Missouri and his talent goes far beyond from what some people think. I have been a backup bass player for Lou Rawls some years ago. I was let go because I didn’t have the right look that the producers wanted. I know what it’s like to miss out. PATRICK THOMSON IS THE REAL THING AND DID NOT GET PASSED BY. HE HAS MADE IT TO THE BIG TIME. CONGRATS TO PATRICK.CARRY ON
