Her audition: We saw just a bit of it, but Amber Nicole, 17, of Houston, Texas, sang Rihanna’s “Russian Roulette.” Cee Lo Green and Christina Augilera turned their chairs “at the last second,” Amber says in her Voice video.

Her background: Her Voice bio tells us that Amber Nicole comes from a large, musically-inspired family. Her father performs in a jazz band and her sister is a vocal coach who’s been working with Amber since she was 13.

On choosing Christina: “I grew up listening to Christina and I came to The Voice with the mindset of ‘I’m going for Christina.’ I’ve always been a fan of hers and I’ve always admired her performances. She’s such a woman and I just see so much of me in her.”

What the show didn’t show: Amber Nicole Scott is a senior at Carver High School back in Texas, where she has performed in a number of stage productions as part of the school’s choir and theater arts program. Roshunda Jones, director of that program, calls her “talented beyond her years.” Amber says she’s been performing “all my life,” including those school productions, gigs with her dad and at family functions. “I’m the first person that somebody calls out to sing.” She says she prefers to perform R&B music.

Quote: “I grew up with a musical family and I’ve always had the drive of singing and performing. I’ve always told myself that runs through my veins.” As for appearing on The Voice: “It’s one thing to dream, but it’s another to be actually living it.”
